Voice and multimedia peering now enabled via XConnect at NAPAfrica
XConnect, the leader in federation-based IP, today announced the establishment of an additional VoIP exchange on an IP peering point in South Africa. In collaboration with NAPAfrica, South Africa's first open and free public peering facility, service providers will now be able to directly exchange IP voice and multimedia traffic.
Operators in South Africa and Africa will be able to securely and multilaterally interconnect to multiple networks via a single IP connection, supporting the interworking and interoperability of IP voice and multimedia services, such as High-Definition Voice, video and Unified Communications (UC). XConnect currently operates other national federations in Germany, North America, Europe, and Asia.
Lex van Wyk, Managing Director of Teraco in South Africa says, "This is an exciting first for NAPAfrica and has significant benefits for operators as it will reduce the technical complexity and commercial and operational costs of NGN interconnection, allowing for migration from bilateral, legacy-network TDM interconnects to IP."
"Voice transit from one VoIP provider to another can cost anything from 5 to 10 cents per minute. However, as a promotional offer to mark this important connectivity milestone, members connecting on NAP Africa will only pay 1.2c transit to each other, for their first full year of membership", says XConnect South Africa CEO, Christopher Geerdts. "We are enabling operators to make calls on IP voice and new multimedia services across each other's networks, with quality improvements and significant cost savings. This will ensure South Africa benefits more richly from the rapid global evolution to IP-based unified communications."
